The Seven Years of Passion soft pastel series by Biljana Arandelovic was the first series to emerge, in 2018. This series was a prelude to a new era that followed a break from artistic engagement while she pursued her academic career. The woman has always had the main role in all of Biljana’s artworks. She is the one who absolutely leads. Biljana delves deeper into the human soul with this new series, and all the series that follow it.
In this series, Arandelovic creates scenarios that pay tribute to the diverse shapes of passion while describing seductive and colorful, but also vivid and luscious everyday life stories. The series celebrates female desires and various aspects of beauty, while portraying moments of unexpected narratives and fragility. Furthermore, it directs attention to solitude and melancholy as unforgettable companions of modern life.
Each story can be interpreted separately. Above all, each story is different in exploring shifting boundaries and embracing the instability of fantasy and fear. As a result, all scenes are rich with metaphor. Arandelovic is bold in her exploration of female sexuality. As a result, her scenes allude to desire and diverse forms of affection. Her deeply personal visual narrative is somewhere between fiction and reality.
Finally, tender, direct, and poetically reflective observations of contemporary life construct unexpected narratives. Using the outside world as a mirror, Arandelovic’s art addresses themes based on the true and unnerving nature of desire and romance and brings light to dramatic effects in her fantasy images. This commentary on the modern world emphasizes feminine beauty through numerous carefully-arranged narratives. Her images pay homage to the new modern woman. The fantasy of happiness seems to be held in perfect balance, ready to welcome whatever comes next. The boundary has disappeared, and much more is yet to come.
The honesty and compassion in Arandelovic’s work reveal and question the social constructs of beauty and femininity. This is an engaging world of feelings, crises and obsessions, arranged in neutral environments. As a result, a fantastic setting between the real and the subconscious is created. Narrative scenes are neither the beginning nor the end of the story. Arandelovic’s work is a sensual reconstruction of everyday moments featuring powerful individuals. Authentically capturing contemporary life, she gives another form to the quotidian life. She presents the dualities of love and suffering. This is the quest for the unattainable. While illustrating her quotidian subject matter, Arandelovic considers reality in an extremely personal way and has the ability to give emotion to daily rituals. The presence of the zebra has its own symbolism. All of her new bodies of work (2018-2019 series) are primarily created in soft pastels, a distinctive choice of medium that offers an exceptional degree of color intensity.
