Portraiture has always been a major subject of interest for Arandelovic. Only a portion of her early portraits are shown here, some from before her arrival in Graz and others during her time there. What is common to all of the selected portraits is the soft pastel technique.
The main characteristic of the portraits is the shift of focus onto the eyes of the model she portrays and the look that those eyes produce. She is interested in reaching the soul of the one she portrays. It is a great challenge because one can get into the soul through eyes, and peek inside. This offers great possibilities, but also temptations. Color choices are also an essential part of portraiture. Arandelovic selects colors based on the person she is studying, and they are never shown in real terms, but instead, she chooses the colors that best draw the inside out. The colors are strong, the contrasts are striking. The last portrait shown here was completed in 2010.
