Installation at St Andrea Church in Graz

The light installation by Biljana Arandelovic was part of a performance held on Ash Wednesday in 2009 at St Andrea’s Church in Graz, when a choir led by Erwin Löschberger performed the Requiem for Dead Ants, composed by Mirjana Anastasijevic. The installation was a visual accompaniment to this musical event.

The installation was constructed out of thirty partially curved metal tubes of different heights gathered together to form an entity in front of the altar. The source of the installation’s illumination was a candle placed in each of the thirty tubes. The light underlined a mystery. Each of the thirty light sources symbolized one ant soul and was a visual background for the Requiem for Dead Ants.

Biljana Arandelovic’s temporary installation was part of this unique space in Graz. The interior of St Andrea’s Catholic Church is not a typical church interior. Numerous contemporary art installations decorate its inner space. The church obtained a permanent art exhibition in 1999 and became known for its authentic artistic interior in Graz. This includes, among many artworks, a magenta glass window sheet covering by Flora Neuwirth and an abstract red wall painting by Otto Zitkos. Some of the most admired art pieces, which create mirror reflections, are made of broken mirror fragments covering the altar as well as the columns, which look like they are wearing a crystal dress (by Gustav Troger).
