Architecture and Art in Public Space in Graz

Biljana Arandjelovic is author of the book Visual Impressions: Architecture and Art in Public Space in Graz. The book, published in 2012 in cooperation with Steirische Gesellschaft für Kulturpolitik, is a production of the Leykam publishing house from Graz (Austria).

In this book, Biljana Arandjelovic sets up visual images of the town in three parts, some more, others less known to the broader public. She passes by the images of the old town heart, presents examples of Graz’s modern architecture and in the end offers a very interesting review of art interventions in public spaces. Her enlistment of impressions does not derive from a rigid systematic selection but is a personal and relaxed summary of architectures, flings that she discovered and gathered during her stay in Graz. It is a result of curiosity and enthusiasm, and therefore the book is a welcome popular expedient to all visitors to Graz on one hand, and sufficiently interesting for the more exacting reader on the other.

The book presentation and press conference were held on Thursday 2nd February 2012 at the building site on the corner of Einspinnergasse/Burggasse in Graz city center. The place, surrounded by historical buildings, is known for being unfinished and has been awaiting construction for a long time. The location for the book presentation was chosen on purpose to raise the question of the future development of the site. The opening speeches at the event were given by Dr. Wolfgang Hölzl (publishing house Leykam) and Dr. Karl Stocker (head of Department Exhibition Design and Information Design at University of Applied Sciences Graz).
